Woman's Death Ruled Accidental After Being Run Over by 13-Year-Old in Truck

The death of woman killed Thursday after being run over by a pick-up truck put into motion by a 13-year-old boy who hit the gas pedal has been ruled an accident.

Ruilan Zeng, 61, was struck outside of her home in the 4500 block of South St. Louis Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. An autopsy conducted Sunday determined Zeng died from multiple injuries due to a truck striking a pedestrian, the medical examiner's office said.

She was tending special Chinese vegetables in her neighbor's garden when the vehicle plowed over her, into a garage and into a brick wall before finally coming to rest.

Police said the truck's driver, a man, got out of the vehicle to collect scrap metal in the alley and his son slid over into the driver's seat, police said. The 13-year-old accidentally hit the gear shift and the accelerator, authorities said.

The father of the 13-year-old boy could faces charges of leaving an unattended vehicle and driving on a suspended license.
