Woman Sexually Assaulted by Man Posing as Ride-Share Driver: Police

A 21-year-old woman was sexually assaulted early Sunday morning on Chicago’s North Side by a man posing as a ride-sharing driver, authorities said.

The woman ordered a ride from a ride-share app around 2 a.m. in the 3300-3500 block of North Halsted Street in the city's Lakeview neighborhood, police said. A man posing as a driver picked the woman up, but after dropping her off at her destination, he lured her back into the vehicle by convincing her she forgot something, police said.

The man then drove off and sexually assaulted the woman in the rear seat of the vehicle, according to authorities.

Sources said the woman was transported to Weiss Hospital with minor injuries.

The man was described being between 40 and 45 years old with a heavy build and an estimated weight of about 300 pounds. He had tan complexion, a round face with a stubbly beard, bushy black eyebrows and was last seen wearing a windbreaker. He also speaks with a heavy accent, police said.

The vehicle he was driving was said to be a beige, tan or white older style car with four doors, possibly a Toyota Camry.

Police are warning rideshare users to avoid getting into vehicles without verifying their ride sharing information. Uber did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Anyone with information surrounding the attack is asked to call Area North Detectives at (312) 744-8261.
