Fatal Hammond Shooting Suspect Arrested in Lynwood

A man suspected of killing a woman and critically wounding two more people in a Hammond, Indiana, shooting was arrested Monday night, authorities said.

Joesph E. Barner was taken into custody in his south suburban hometown of Lynwood, Hammond Police Lt. Richard Hoyda said about 9:15 p.m.

The shooting happened about 6 a.m. in the 1300 block of Truman Street in Hammond, where officers found 44-year-old Carmelle Erbie Cajuste dead near the front door of a home with a gunshot wound to the head, according to Hoyda and the Lake County coroner’s office. She lived on the same block as the shooting.

A 36-year-old woman was also shot in the head and a 27-year-old man, who lives in the home, was shot in the neck, Hoyda said. Both were taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Barner’s vehicle was later found in the 1300 block of Indiana Street in Hammond, and authorities considered him armed and dangerous as a temporary warrant was issued Monday afternoon.
