Elderly Woman Killed, Man Wounded in “Domestic-Related” Shooting

Neighbors said the couple didn’t appear to have any problems and said the shooting is unusual for the area

A 71-year-old woman is dead and a man wounded in suburban Morton Grove after a shooting during a reported “domestic situation,” police said.

Officers responding to a report of a domestic situation Friday night arrived at a home in the 500 block of Madison Street where they found 71-year-old Chung Kim fatally shot and a man, believed to be her husband, wounded.

Kim was pronounced dead at the scene and the man was taken to an area hospital where his condition was not known.

Residents in the neighborhood said the couple had lived in the home for nearly 15 years and spent a lot of time tending to a vegetable garden in their backyard.

“I talked to [Chung Kim] Thursday night,” said neighbor Carl Miehlke. "It's one of those things that I never would have expected."

Neighbors said the couple didn’t appear to have any problems and said the shooting is unusual for the area.

“This would be the last place on Earth something like that would happen,” said neighbor Steve Davis.

Details surrounding what exactly prompted the shooting were not immediately available but police said the incident was domestic-related and did not pose a danger to the community. An investigation is ongoing.
