Woman, 61, Shot in Neck When Bullets Pierce Home

A 61-year-old woman was shot in the neck while sitting in her living room when bullets pierced a window in her home on Chicago’s Southwest Side.

The shooting prompted a miles-long police chase that extended into suburban Chicago.

The woman, identified by family as Miriam Enriquez, was in her house around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 3600 block of South Honore Street when shots were fired from outside, police said. The shooting stemmed from an argument between someone who lives in the home and a man in a nearby alley.

Police said the suspect left the alley in a white sedan, shooting into the home as he fled. At least six bullet holes could been seen in the home's front window.

"It was like pop, pop, pop," said neighbor Abundio Perez. "It was so consistent."

Officers responding to a call of shots fired said they noticed a vehicle with no headlights about a block away, but when they tried to pull the car over the driver sped away.

Police chased the fleeing vehicle from the 3700 block of South Wolcott to southbound Interstate 55 and onto the northbound ramp to Interstate 294, where it crashed, authorities said.

The man was taken into custody and was being questioned Wednesday morning, police said.

Enriquez was taken to John H. Stroger Hospital where she was listed in stable condition.

Family members said Enriquez was called the "neighborhood watch" because she was often looking out her window, keeping an eye on her block.

"We're surpised, extremely shocked," said Enriquez' nephew Rick Gonzalez. "We've never had anybody that we know of have anything like this happen to them."

Residents in the area say the shooting is frightening for the neighborhood.

"Never have I seen in 14 years," said resident Jesus Nieto. "I can't describe what I am feeling."
