Wise Declines New U of Illinois Job, Again Tries to Resign

University of Illinois Chancellor Phyllis Wise says she has submitted her resignation for a second time and declined an appointment to an advisory role reporting directly to President Timothy Killeen.

Wise said in an email to reporters Thursday night that she is now talking to lawyers about potential next steps.

Wise announced her resignation last week just before the university disclosed that she and others had used private emails to discuss university business and avoid public disclosure. As part of her resignation she was to receive $400,000 as a prorated portion of the retention bonus her contract called for if she stayed five years.

But Gov. Bruce Rauner's administration this week publicly opposed the bonus. Trustees then decided to fire her, and Killeen assigned her to the new position.
