Wisconsin City Named Drunkest City in America: Report

According to a new report, 17 of the top 20 drunkest cities in America are in the Midwest and 12 are in Wisconsin alone

Apparently, people in the Midwest drink a lot – and not just for hydration.

According to a new report, 17 of the top 20 drunkest cities in America are in the Midwest and 12 are in Wisconsin alone. (If you count Nebraska as Midwest, that number climbs to 18.)

The report, by analysis company 24/7 Wall Street, reviewed self-reported binge and heavy drinking rates among adults in nearly 400 U.S. metro areas, culled from County Health Rankings & Roadmaps.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines “binge drinking” as consuming four or more drinks for women and five or more drinks for men during a single sitting. “Heavy drinking” is classified as 15 or more drinks consumed per week for men and eight or more drinks a week for women.

According to the study, Appleton, Wisconsin was the named the drunkest city in America, with 26.8 percent of adults "drinking to excess." The city also reports 30.3 percent of driving deaths involve alcohol.

Appleton was followed on the list by Oshkosh-Neenah, Wisconsin; Green Bay, Wisconsin; Madison, Wisconsin; and Fargo, North Dakota. All of the top five cities reported more than 25 percent of adults drinking to excess.

The “driest” cities in the nation were Provo-Orem, Utah; St. George, Utah; Beckley, West Virginia; Logan, Utah and Ogden-Clearfield, Utah. Provo-Orem reported only 9.2 percent of adults drinking to excess.
