Winnetka: No Candy for You!

Rule bans parade participants from handing out candy

If you attend any kind of parade in Winnetka, don’t expect to receive buckets of free candy. In fact, don’t expect any candy at all.

A new Park District rule in the city has banned parade participants from handing out candy at events, according to the Southtown Star. The city cited safety concerns as the reasoning behind the rule.

Last year, two kids ran into the street to grab spare pieces of candy, and while no one was hurt, officials began rethinking the rules.

“It’s a pretty dangerous situation,” Police Chief Joe De Lopez told the newspaper. “We’re not trying to be ogres.”

Some Winnetka residents have accepted the new change, while others are protesting.

Resident Julie Clary told the paper she thought the safety precautions were unnecessary.

“I understand their reasoning for it, but this is a small community, this is Winnetka,” she said. “Let’s try to preserve the traditions this town has always had.”
