Willson Contreras Sets New Cubs Record Friday Night

With his double in Friday night’s loss to the New York Mets at Citi Field, Willson Contreras not only provided the Chicago Cubs with a rare bright spot in the game, but he also set a new franchise record in the process.

Thanks to the hit, Contreras reached base for the 13th consecutive game to start his career, and that is a new team record, according to Christopher Kamka of Comcast SportsNet Chicago.

Contreras is currently batting .318 with three home runs and 10 RBI for the Cubs, and has bounced all over the diamond as Cubs manager Joe Maddon has looked to get his bat into the lineup as much as possible. He’s already played plenty behind the plate, his natural position, and he’s also spent time at first base and in left field for the injury-ravaged Cubs.

Before he was called up to the Cubs, Contreras had a 20-game hitting streak going for the team’s Triple-A affiliate in Des Moines. In the 13 games he has played with the Cubs, he has only failed to get a hit in one contest, and he has had two multiple-hit games during that span.

If Contreras wants to set the Cubs’ team record for most consecutive games reaching base, he is going to have to continue his streak for a good long time. According to Baseball Reference's Play Index, Riggs Stephenson holds the record, reaching base in 44 consecutive games during the 1928 season for the Cubs. Starlin Castro nearly broke that record in 2011, reaching safely in 43 consecutive contests.
