Willson Contreras Apologizes to Fans After Game 1 Loss

There wasn’t a lot for Chicago Cubs fans to smile about during Tuesday’s loss to the Cleveland Indians in Game 1 of the World Series, but one highlight came in the ninth inning thanks to Willson Contreras.

Going up against Cody Allen, Contreras got a pitch he liked and absolutely hammered a shot off the right field wall at Progressive Field. The ball ended up bouncing away from both Cleveland defenders, and every Cubs fans assumed that Contreras would reach third base on the miscue.

There was one little tiny detail that prevented that from happening: Contreras didn’t break out of the batter’s box right away, instead admiring a shot that he thought was going to get out of the ballpark.

Contreras did get a double on the play, but he clearly heard about the criticism about his lack of hustle, because he tweeted about it after the game:

This isn’t the first time during the postseason that a Cubs player has gotten into some hot water for not hustling on a play. During the Cubs’ series against the San Francisco Giants, Javier Baez hit a ball that he thought was going to clear the left-field wall at Wrigley Field, but it stayed in play and the infielder was thrown out at second base.
