Widow of Trooper Killed in Crash Settles For $10.9 million

The widow of an Illinois state trooper killed when his squad car was hit by a truck on Interstate 294 has reached a $10.9 million settlement with the driver and the companies he worked for that day.

Trooper James Sauter was killed on March 28, 2013. Wisconsin truck driver Andrew Bokelman has been charged in the 28-year-old Sauter's death. He's accused of violating federal rules meant to prevent commercial drivers from becoming dangerously fatigued.

Elizabeth Sauter filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Bokelman, United Van Lines LLC, Unigroup Inc., and Suddath Relocation Systems of Minnesota and Milwaukee doing business as Barrett Moving & Storage.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Cook County Circuit Judge Kathy M. Flanagan on Wednesday approved the settlement, which was reached several months ago in mediation.
