Whitney Young abruptly canceled its entire football season just days before the school was set to play its homecoming game, school officials confirmed.
The high school's principal, Dr. Joyce Kenner, said the reason behind the decision was due to injuries and lack of eligible players.
Chicago Public Schools said the high school did not have 22 active participants, "which is the number of students required to field a team."
Kenner noted the school does plan to rebuild for next season.
Whitney Young's homecoming game will be replaced by the school's soccer game vs. Curie Thursday afternoon, according to the school's website.
