A 65-year-old woman was killed after a car struck her in west suburban North Riverside on Thursday night.
The woman, identified as Elaine Gorny from North Riverside, was hit by a car on the intersection of 25th Street and DesPlaines Avenue, police said.
The car fled the scene.
The woman lived with her husband, Jerry, in a home on Forest Avenue. The couple were empty-nesters, with a son in the U.S. Navy.
Neighbors said they frequently saw Gorny walking through the neighborhood. A clerk at a nearby BP gas station said Gorny was in the store at least once or twice a week.
That's apparently where she was just before the accident. A timestamped receipt from the store puts her there shortly before she was killed.
Two witnesses said the vehicle was speeding and blew a traffic light on the north side of the intersection.
Police are searching for a newer model, four-door vehicle, either gray or silver with a partial license plate of K97.
Anyone with information should call the North Riverside Police Department, at 708-447-9191.
