The officer was investigating a complaint of a suspicious vehicle

An off-duty police officer in north suburban Waukegan reportedly shot a fleeing driver on Monday evening after responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle, police said.

At approximately 5:50 p.m., an off-duty Waukegan police officer, who was wearing a uniform, was approached by a citizen about a suspicious vehicle in an apartment parking lot in the 2200 block of North Butrick Street, according to a news release.

As the officer started to investigate, the driver sped off almost hitting the officer, police said. The officer then shot the suspect, a 22-year-old Waukegan man, at least once.
