Wainwright Says Heyward Didn't Want to be “Cornerstone” Player

In an interview, Wainwright said that he doesn’t believe Heyward wanted to be a “cornerstone” player with the Cardinals

Over the weekend St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny criticized comments that new Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward made about his former team, and on Tuesday, Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright gave his thoughts on his former teammate's decision to head to the Windy City.

In an interview, Wainwright said that he doesn’t believe Heyward wanted to be a “cornerstone” player with the Cardinals.

“It really comes down to a personality trait to me,” he told a St. Louis radio station. “The person that we want to give that kind of money to, that big money to, he needs to be a person that wants to be the guy that carries the torch. He needs to be a guy that wants to be the person, that after we leave, he carries on the tradition. And that’s just a personality thing, and there’s nothing wrong with that. We’re looking for that guy who wants to be the man.”

During his introductory press conference with the Cubs, Heyward said he wanted to be with a team that he could grow with, not one that could slowly start to disband over the next few years. Wainwright’s comments hinted at that, but they also read as him challenging whether or not Heyward had what it took to be “the man” on a team like the Cardinals.

In the case of the Cubs, Heyward will be looked to as a big part of the club, but he won’t have to shoulder the burden alone. Players like Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant will certainly help ease the pressure on Heyward in a way that St. Louis was unable to do in 2015, and it will be interesting to see whether or not the comments made by Wainwright and Matheny in recent days will help spur Heyward to save some extra punch for the Cardinals when the teams meet next season.
