The south suburban village of Robbins turned water back on for up to 70 families Monday night, hours after the village shut water off at their homes, citing a lack of payment from the landlord.
Marvin Wells, the owner of six buildings, was given five opportunities to pay the $8,000 he owned, but failed to do so, according to village spokesman Sean Howard.
Howard said Mayor Tyrone Ward "graciously reduced" the bill to $4,100 to ensure tenants would be spared of any inconvenience.
Wells, the landlord, said he wants a meter to be read, instead of being charged a flat rate.
Howard said Monday night the village planned to give Wells two weeks to come up with the money he owed. If he doesn't comply, residents may be forced to find alternate housing.
