Van Crashes Into Northwest Side Dunkin' Donuts

No serious injuries were reported Monday after a van crashed into a Dunkin' Donuts on the city's Northwest Side.

It happened at about 4:15 p.m. at the business located in a strip mall at 3843 N Cicero Ave.

The van's driver, an 83-year-old man, lost control of the vehicle and crashed through the glass window at the front of the restaurant.

Employee Betzy Cotto said two customers were inside the store when van came crashing through, sending glass flying everywhere.

"I was making a hot latte and the car just came in," Cotto said. "I guess I'm gonna have some vacation time."

Employees and witnesses say it's amazing that nobody was hurt, but usually someone is sitting at the tables that were hit by the van.

The driver was visibly shaken by the incident, but unhurt. Police let him drive away in the scratched-up van after he assured them he was OK to drive.

"I think he thought was making a right turn, and his wheels weren't turned right, and he stepped on the gas and he ended up going right through the building," witness Dan Carden said. "He was stunned. I don't think he really knew what he did."

The owner says he plans to reopen in a couple of days.

Police did not say whether any charges would be filed in the case.
