Several people including two children were sent to the hospital after a large tree fell on an SUV Friday in Wilmette.

Wilmette Fire Duty Chief Paul Bergquist said strong winds likely uprooted the tree that toppled onto the vehicle, trapping a family inside. The vehicle was headed west on 60th Street when the tree fell.

"The damage to the vehicle was substantial," Bergquist said.

One person had to be extricated, Bergquist said. Everyone in the family was freed from the vehicle.

The incident remains under investigation.
