United Center Closed After Fight Causes ‘Public Safety' Issue: Police

A fight broke out in the United Center Monday night causing the massive sports facility to close for “public safety purposes,” police said.

The fight started about 5:09 p.m. at a basketball tournament, according to Chicago police.

According to Safe Summer League Basketball’s website, the organization was hosting a tournament at the United Center.

The youth sports organization did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Orr Academy High School and Curie Metropolitan High School were scheduled to play their championship game before the brawl broke up the tournament. The two schools are crosstown rivals, volunteer coach Moe Powers said.

"Trying to bring the city together under one roof creates energy... sometimes bad energy," he said.

No arrests were made and no injuries were reported.
