USPS Prepares for Busiest Mailing Day of the Year

Officials anticipate processing hundreds of millions of pieces of mail on Monday

Post offices across the city are gearing up for the madness on Monday, which officials say is the busiest mailing day of the year.

On Monday, the United States Postal Service is expecting to process hundreds of millions of cards, letters and packages. Over the course of this holiday season, 15.5 billion pieces of mail will be sent worldwide by the USPS.

Chicago-area postal officials say they’ve already seen an increase in the amount of packages brought to post offices, and are urging area residents to ship sooner rather than later.

Already, postal workers are delivering packages seven days a week in Chicago and across the country. For arrival by Christmas, officials recommend sending by Dec. 21 via Priority Mail, or Dec. 23 for Express shipping.

“Initial package volume is well above last year’s pace,” Chicago District Manager Greg Johnson said in a release. ”We know our customers are counting on us to deliver the holidays again this year, and we’ll be delivering packages every day through Christmas.”
