Four Injured, Three Seriously, in Park Ridge Crash

Authorities remained at the scene early Thursday morning and the intersection was expected to remain closed until 6 a.m.

A two-vehicle crash left at least four people hurt, three seriously, late Wednesday night and closed a busy intersection in suburban Park Ridge for several hours.

The accident happened around 11 p.m. Wednesday near Devon and Cumberland, police said.

Citing initial reports, police said a 2014 Audi, driven by a 24-year-old Park Ridge woman, was traveling northbound on Cumberland at Devon when it was hit by a 1996 Chevy driven by a 20-year-old Park Ridge man.

The Chevy was traveling eastbound on Devon at a high rate of speed when it approached the intersection at Cumberland, ran a red light and hit the Audi, according to authorities.

After striking the Audi, the Chevy then hit a tree and a light pole on the parkway.

The driver of the Chevy was taken to Lutheran General Hospital with serious injuries. Two passengers in the Chevy, a 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman, were ejected from the vehicle and also taken to Lutheran General Hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The driver of the Audi was taken to Resurrection Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said they are investigating whether street racing was involved in the crash.

"This could have been a lot worse," said Deputy Chief Lou Jogmen.

Authorities remained at the scene early Thursday morning and the intersection was expected to remain closed until 6 a.m.

Bob Newberry was at the scene early Thursday morning and said his 18-year-old daughter was one of those ejected from the Chevy and hospitalized. The teen had just graduated high school, he said.
