2 Teens Killed in Stolen Car Crash

Police say car reported stolen in Dolton crashed in the 300 block of East 147th Street

Police say two teens killed in an accident early Sunday in south suburban Harvey, Illinois, were riding in a stolen car.

Sixteen-year-old Michael Johnson of Riverdale and an 18-year-old female were killed, and two other teenagers were seriously wounded in the single-vehicle crash in the 300 block of East 147th Street shortly after 2 a.m.

Both of the victims who died in the crash were riding in the back seat. The two wounded passengers, a male and a female, were in the front seat and between the ages of 16 and 18 and were both taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to Harvey spokesman Sean Howard.

Howard says the car was reported stolen in Dolton and the teens were speeding from there into Harvey on 147th Street when they crashed.

Johnson's mother, Rosalind Thomas, says his cousin was driving the car that crash.

She says her youngest son (pictured, below) was a junior at Thornton High School who loved to fix things. She said he had a curfew and was supposed to spending the night with relatives.

"They told me Mike was going to get in the car with someone else but there wasn't enough room, so he got in with his cousin," Thomas said.

The four-door car appears to have crashed into a power pole at a bus stop. It's unclear if any of the passengers were wearing seatbelts.

Autopsies were scheduled for Sunday.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from a nearby Metra parking lot and a car lot across the street.
