Three Dead, 10 Injured in Weekend Violence

Among the victims was a 36-year-old man who was shot in a nightclub in the South Loop after he got into an argument about a woman

Violence struck Chicago early this weekend with two fatal shootings before 10 a.m. Saturday. At least one other person was killed and 10 others injured in shootings across the city over the weekend.

The first fatal shooting happened at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning at Riff Music Lounge in the 2200 block of South Michigan in the South Loop. Two men were allegedly arguing about a woman when one of them opened fire on the other, killing him.

The victim was identified as 36-year-old Michael Ricks of the 2300 block of South State. Another man who was an innocent bystander was also shot in the abdomen and taken to John H. Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized, police said.

Another man was killed in a shooting at about 9:15 a.m. Saturday in the 8800 block of South Cottage Grove in the Chatham neighborhood. The 26-year-old man was shot in the head and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he later died, police said. No one is in custody.

A 25-year-old man was killed in another shooting at about 2 a.m. Sunday in the 12200 block of South Racine Avenue in the West Pullman neighborhood. The man was sitting in a parked car with two others when a gunman approached on foot.

The alleged gunman began firing shots and struck the victim in the head. The other people in the car then drove him to MetroSouth Medical Center, where he later died.

The two other people in the car were not struck by the gunfire, police said.

At least nine other people were injured in shootings across the city since Friday evening:

  • A 23-year-old man was shot in the chest at about 6 p.m. Friday at a cellphone store in the 3200 block of West 87th Street in the Ashburn neighborhood. The man was allegedly involved in a verbal argument when the other man pulled out a gun and shot him. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition.
  • Another 23-year-old man was shot in the hip at about 7:15 p.m. Friday while he was inside a car in the 5300 block of West Jackson in the Austin neighborhood. He was in the vehicle when another car pulled up and someone got out and opened fire. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, police said.
  • A 28-year-old man was shot in the chin at about 1:10 a.m. Saturday in the 6300 block of West Belmont in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood. The man was inside a parked car in an alley when another car pulled up and someone inside opened fire. After the man was shot, he drove himself to Presence Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center, where he remained in serious condition, police said. He was later transferred to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
  • A 27-year-old woman suffered graze wounds to her legs after in a shooting at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday in the 2000 block of West Fullerton in the Bucktown neighborhood. The woman was inside a car as a passenger when another car pulled up next to it and someone inside opened fire. The woman then exited the car and got into her own vehicle to drive herself to Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center.
  • A 29-year-old man was shot in the leg at about 2 a.m. Saturday in the 100 block of North Ada on the city's Near West Side. The man was standing outside when he heard gun shots and realized he had been struck. Someone drove him to Rush University Medical Center, and he was later transferred to John H. Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
  • A 36-year-old man was shot in the hip at about 2:38 p.m. in the 1000 block of West 103rd Place in the Washington Heights neighborhood. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center.
  • An 18-year-old man was shot in the hand at about 4:20 p.m. in the 7600 block of South Hermitage Avenue in the Gresham neighborhood. He was transported to Holy Cross Hospital.
  • At about the same time, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the 7000 block of South Laflin Street in the Englewood neighborhood. He was transported to Comer Children's Hospital.
  • A 58-year-old man was shot in his right knee at about 9:20 p.m. Saturday in the 00-99 block of South Kilbourn in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. He was taken to Rush Oak Park Hospital and later transferred to Loyola University Medical Center.
