Two Critically Injured in Crash in McKinley Park

The driver of a semi and the passenger of a car were injured in the accident

A woman was killed and another person critically injured when a car crashed into a semi truck in the McKinley Park neighborhood on the South Side early Sunday.

At about 5:20 a.m., the semi exited northbound Interstate 55 and turned left onto Damen when a 2008 Dodge sedan slammed into its trailer on the passenger side, police News Affairs Officer Janel Sedevic said.

The driver of the Dodge–a female whose age wasn’t available–and a 23-year-old woman in the passenger seat were taken to Stroger Hospital, where the passenger later died, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The passenger was identified as Sonia Vargas, of the 3500 block of South Washtenaw, according to the medical examiner's office.

The car's driver was listed in critical condition, and the truck driver was not hurt, police said.

No charges or citations had been issued as of Sunday afternoon as the police Major Accidents Investigations unit looks into the crash.
