Two Babies Born 1 Minute Into New Year

One of the babies was born to a labor and delivery nurse

Two babies were born at suburban hospitals one minute into the New Year.

Maximus Edward Maise was born at 12:01 a.m. at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, a hospital spokeswoman confirmed. The 8-pound baby is the son of Nick and Megan Maise. Megan Maise is a nurse in the labor and delivery department at the hospital.

Megan Maise said she went to the hospital on Dec. 30 and was induced by 8 a.m. on New Year's Eve.

"One of our doctors bought some sparkling apple juice and the girls brought it in," she said.

The couple said they're happy their baby was born on New Year's.

"I think it’s better probably to be a New Year’s baby than a Christmas baby," Megan Maise said.

At the same time, Krystina Cozzie of South Elgin gave birth to a baby boy at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, the hospital said.

Preston Scott Cozzie Jr. weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces.

About an hour and a half later, a baby girl was born in Chicago at Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Thirty minutes after that, at 2:04 a.m., Northwestern Memorial Hospital said the hospital’s first baby of the New Year was born.

At 8:06 a.m., a baby was born at NorthShore Highland Park Hospital, the first baby to be born at the hospital in 2015. Arwen Zhu, born to Tianming Zhu and Peilan Zhou of Northbrook, was born at 7 pounds and 5 ounces.

The baby girl is the couple's first child.
