2 Arrested in Fatal Robbins Crash That Killed Parents, Injured 3 Children

The two men are accused of racing their cars at a "high rate of speed" when they crashed into a minivan carrying the family of five

Two men were arrested and charged Saturday in connection with a three-car crash in south suburban Chicago that left a mother and father dead and seven others, including their three children, injured.

Douglas McGrew, 25, and Craig Stevenson, 41, are accused of racing their cars at a "high rate of speed" northbound on Central Park Avenue in Robbins on Thursday night and running through a stop sign at 137th Street, causing them to strike a minivan with a family of five inside, according to the Cook County sheriff's office.

McGrew, of Robbins, and Stevenson, of Lynwood, were both charged with reckless homicide. McGrew was also charged with two counts of aggravated DUI, the sheriff's office said.

The family of five was driving home from a church event at the time of the fatal crash.

"They're doing everything that they're supposed to do," said Robbins Police Chief Mitchell Davis. "They got themselves buckled in, they got their kids buckled in, they're going down the street not doing anything wrong. Then, out of the blue, their lives are just devastated and we've got three orphans now."

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified Chires Davis, 43, and Less Jones, 59, as the parents who were killed in the crash. Their children — ages 4, 7 and 8 — were injured in the crash. As of Sunday, the children remained at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in unknown conditions.

Four other adults were injured in the crash, including McGrew and Stevenson and the passengers in their cars. A second passenger in Stevenson's car refused medical treatment, according to the sheriff's office.

Stevenson is scheduled to appear in bond court Sunday. McGrew's bond hearing will be scheduled for a later date as he remains hospitalized, the sheriff's office said.
