Alderman to Propose New Ordinance for Sports Plaza Near Wrigley Field

Cubs fans and Wrigleyville residents could soon be able to venture over to an outdoor sports plaza near Wrigley Field under a new ordinance being proposed by Ald. Tom Tunney.

The venue, which would be adjacent to Wrigley Field, would house farmers markets, movies in the park, children’s events, fitness events, live music, seasonal festivals, and could even mark the return of the Wrigley ice rink. Beer and wine would also be sold.

“The goal is to boost year-round positive economic activity in the Wrigley area,” Tunney said in a statement. “Events on the plaza will assist our local small business community throughout the year and provide neighbors and families with community based activities and events to enjoy.”

An ordinance for the plaza and office building was first introduced in 2013 but was never acted upon as the Cubs worked to refine redevelopment plans, Tunney said.

The new ordinance restricts the hours of operation on the plaza for liquor sales and events and sets limitations on noise.

“I want to remind everyone that this is a draft ordinance and many of the details are still being worked out,” Tunney said in a statement.

Tunney plans to introduce the ordinance at the City Council Meeting on Wednesday.
