Truman College Instructor Accused of Sexually Assaulting Former Student

An associate English professor at Truman College allegedly sexually assaulted a former student he had recently begun dating.

Max Gulias II attacked the woman at his residence in the 1500 block of South Sangamon after the two met up at a bar on March 20, Assistant State’s Attorney Dan Griffin said.

The woman, 28, fell asleep on Gulias’ bed before she woke up with no clothes on and Gulias on top of her, Griffin said.

The woman tried to fight 45-year-old Gulias off, but he used his weight to hold her down, Griffin said.

The woman immediately reported the attack to security officials at the apartment building as she left, Griffin said.

Gulias, who was the woman’s professor in 2007 and 2008, turned himself in to police on Monday.

The woman and Gulias had started dating within the last few weeks, prosecutors said.

Gulias’ attorney Patrick Campanelli said the woman, who was married, had initially reached out to Gulias because she was having problems with her husband.

Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. ordered Gulias held in lieu of $30,000 bail Wednesday for criminal sexual assault.

The judge also ordered Gulias, who wore a tan seersucker suit in court, on electronic monitoring.

An official with Truman College refused comment.
