Trooper Seriously Hurt in Crash on I-80/94 in Northwest Indiana

The trooper had to be extricated from his SUV and airlifted to a hospital, police said

An Indiana State Police trooper was seriously injured in a crash Wednesday morning on the Borman Expressway near Lake Station.

Trooper Jacob Raupp, 26, was westbound in the center lane of I-80/94 near the Ripley Street exit when he approached traffic that had slowed down, according to a statement from ISP.

Raupp’s 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe, which is a marked police SUV, struck the back of a 2001 International semi truck that was pulling an empty flatbed trailer, police said.

The trooper was extricated from the SUV and airlifted from the scene to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with serious injuries, police said.

Raupp, a three-year veteran, is assigned to the Commercial Motor Vehicle Division.

The interstate was closed for reconstruction of the crash, airlifting the trooper and vehicle removal and cleanup, police said. All eastbound lanes have reopened and one westbound lane was reopened at 11:38 a.m., police said.
