Derailment Halts South Shore Trains in Gary

South Shore train service was temporarily suspended Saturday morning as a freight train derailed in Gary, Ind., the agency said.

The freight derailed near Broadway in Gary, just north of the South Shore tracks.

The derailed cars struck a gas line, but the line was shut off and is being repaired, accoridng to NIPSCO spokesman Eddie Melton.

The gas line is used by industrial and commercial customers. 

Hazmat crews advised the service halt and were investigating the scene, but no residential or commercial NIPSCO customers were impacted, Melton said.

Train service resumed with the departure of Train 504, scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 10:16 a.m.

Three or four cars derailed on the tracks just outside of a residential area, according to witnesses.
