A 19-month-old girl was struck and killed by a CTA bus Monday afternoon in the South Shore neighborhood, according to police.

Cherish Meyers (pictured, below) ran in to traffic at about 3:20 p.m. in the 7700 block of South South Shore Drive when she was hit by the No. 6 Jackson Park Express bus that was headed north.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

According to a witness, Willie Butler, the girl ran onto the street earlier and a woman grabbed her, but the girl ran out another time.

"I saw the little baby run, and here comes the bus," Butler said.

Police said the driver of the CTA bus apparently tried to swerve to avoid hitting the young girl but was unable to do so.
