‘Tired of Walking': Drunk Man Steals Excavator, Takes Out Power Lines

A drunken man in Oswego is accused of stealing an excavator from a construction site in the suburb and driving it down a neighborhood street, taking out power lines, according to police.

Officers were called just after midnight Friday to Treasure Drive and Harvey Road after reports of “an excavator driving down the roadway taking down power lines.”

An officer spotted the excavator traveling down Treasure Drive near Blue Ridge Drive and ordered the driver to stop.

The driver fell out of the excavator and told police he stole it from a construction site about a mile away because was “tired of walking and needed some wheels.”

The man was arrested for felony theft, driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. Police said his blood alcohol content was three times the legal limit.

Police posted news about the arrest on Facebook early Friday morning, accompanied with a photo of an officer driving the excavator.

“Not only are the Oswego Police trained to serve and protect, but they can also handle heavy equipment,” the post read. “Thank-you Officer Dickey for removing this beast from the middle of the road.”
