Three Shot on Dan Ryan Expressway: “Completely Random”

“We have no ties to these people," one victim said

Three people were shot while driving on the Dan Ryan Expressway early Friday morning.

Illinois State Police said a car was driving south on Interstate 94 near 55th Street a little after 1 a.m. when it was shot at.

The three victims, whose ages were not immediately known, were taken to Saint Bernard Hospital in stable condition. One person was shot in the abdomen and was expected to be transferred to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and two others were expected to be treated and released with wounds to the hip and head.

Two other people who were in the vehicle were not injured, police said.

One of the victims, who suffered a graze wound to the head and wished to remain anonymous, said the group was driving on the expressway to meet up with friends when the shooting happened.

“We were on the expressway and they pulled up next to us and started shooting,” he said. “We have no ties to these people, you know what I’m saying? It’s unnecessary. All the violence is unnecessary and it needs to be stopped.”

The victim called the shooting “completely random.”

At least eight bullet holes could be seen in the group’s white Chevrolet.

Police said two shell casings were found on the roadway and traffic was being diverted to the express lanes between 43rd and 57th Streets while police investigated. All lanes of the expressway were reopened by 4 a.m.

The shooting is one of a string of shootings on area expressways over the last month and is the third reported this week.

On Wednesday, a 31-year-old driver was shot at while driving on Lake Shore Drive. The driver was on Lake Shore Drive at the Oak Street curve around 1:30 a.m. when his vehicle was shot at by a man in a car next to him, authorities said. The victim said he did not know the shooter.

On Monday, another person was shot on the Dan Ryan Expressway. Police said a man in his 20s drove himself to Mercy Hospital after being shot on the expressway around 3 a.m. near 31st Street.

Earlier this month, a shooting was reported on the Eisenhower Expressway.

Last month, a shooting on the Bishop Ford's Stony Island ramp had the outbound lanes of the freeway closed for several hours during morning rush hour.
