Three Shot Near U of C Campus in Hyde Park

Three people were shot early Monday near the University of Chicago campus in the South Side Hyde Park neighborhood.

Two men and a woman were sitting in a parked silver car in an alley in the 5400 block of South Ellis at 12:30 a.m. when a male walked up and fired shots, police said.

According to a security alert sent to University of Chicago students, the three victims are not affiliated with the school but ran into a campus parking garage at 55th and Ellis after the shooting. University police also responded to the shooting.

The 22-year-old woman was shot in the chest and abdomen and taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, police said.

One of the men, 35, was shot in the left and leg and was also taken to Stroger, where his condition stabilized, police said.

The other man, 24, was shot in the chin, chest and left leg and was taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

A police source said the two men are both documented gang members.

“The motive for the shooting is unknown and there is no suspect information at this time,” according to the alert sent out by the university.

Authorities early Monday investigated the parked vehicle where the shooting happened, and also a university shuttle bus across the street on 55th near the parking garage.

A 63-year-old man who lives in the same block of the shooting said he heard seven rounds go off. He said the car was parked on one of the two lots he owns in the area, but he declined to give his name.
