A rare Italian violin made in 1763 was stolen from a home in Andersonville yesterday, and police are looking for the culprit -- and the violin.

The burglar apparently found a key in a planter outside the home in the 5200 block of North Wayne. The residents were inside sleeping at the time, and the thief was so stealthy they didn't wake up until it was all over.

The violin is likely worth more than $50,000. It has an internal label that says "Januarius Gagliano, Naple, 1763. On the violin's back is a geometric design that connects six fleurs de lys. A round, red sponge shoulder rest is attached with a rubber band, and the chin rest is brown.

Three bows, two made by H.R. Pfretzschner and one by Emile Ouchard, were also taken, along with a black case by Bobelock.

Anyone who thinks they have information about the missing violin should call Area 3 detectives at (312) 744-8263, and reference case No. HR-415928.
