Teens Charged in Shooting of Off-Duty Police Officer Denied Bail

Two teens charged in the shooting of an off-duty Oak Park police officer in Chicago over the weekend were denied bail during Tuesday court appearances.

Taiwan McNeal, 18, was charged with felony attempted armed robbery, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery resulting in the discharge of a firearm. A 17-year-old boy, whose name was not released because he is a minor, also faces the same charges.

Court appearances for both teens were scheduled for May 26, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The Oak Park officer, identified by his family as 58-year-old Johnny Patterson, of Chicago, was in his garage around 5:13 a.m. Sunday in the 300 block of West 103rd Place when he was approached by two males, police said.

One of the men held up a gun while another began to search Patterson. Police said Patterson then drew his gun and exchanged gunfire with the armed suspect.

Patterson was shot in the arm and leg, police said, but was able to return fire and made contact with one of the suspects.

Both suspects fled the scene but were found in a gangway several blocks away. The 17-year-old boy had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

Patterson and the teen were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center for treatment. A spokesperson for the hospital said Patterson was released Monday.
