Teen Killed by Stray Bullet in Humboldt Park

Killer was chasing, shooting at someone else, police say.

A 15-year-old boy who was shot and killed Saturday night in the Humboldt Park neighborhood was apparently struck by stray gunfire from a person chasing and shooting at someone else.

Police responded at 8:39 p.m. to the 800 block of North Harding Avenue and found the boy with a gunshot wound to the chest, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said.

It appears someone was chasing and shooting at someone else, but instead struck the teen as he sat in a chair, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said.

Police think the boy may not have been the intended target of the shooting, Perez said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified the boy as 15-year-old Darrell McKinney, of an unknown home address, and listed the location of the shooting as 956 N. Harding Ave., a spokesman said.

McKinney was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 9:16 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

Harrison Area detectives are investigating, but nobody was in custody as of early Sunday.
