Things are slowly getting back to normal on the Bishop Ford near South Suburban Dolton, hours after a tanker carrying 45,000 of a toxic chemical sprang a leak, wreaking havoc on morning commuters.
The southbound lanes of Interstate 94 from 130th Street south to Dolton Avenue were closed, but two of them were re-opened by late afternoon as the large cleanup effort continued. Northbound lanes were not affected.
The outbound commute took a turn a turn for the worse when the driver of the truck noticed that his tank was leaking shortly after 6 a.m., pulled over and called authorities.
The truck was leaking about five pounds of the corrosive a minute, Illinois State Police Lt. Luis Gutierrez said.
The leak was contained to a shoulder lane and did not present a human health hazard, authorities said.
