Suspect Exchanged Gunfire With Officer, Shot Self: Police

A suspect shot himself after exchanging gunfire with a police officer in a Chicago suburb, police announced late Tuesday night.

The person, who police only described as a male, was pulled over during a traffic stop Tuesday night about 8:41, Aurora police said in a statement, at North Avenue and South Fourth Street. The person ran from the stopped vehicle and an officer pursued him on foot, police said, and both the suspect and the officer exchanged gunshots.

Police said the suspect was later found in a backyard in the 200 block of South LaSalle Street where he had apparently shot himself in the head. He was then taken to an area hospital for treatment and then airlifted to another hospital with a life-threatening wound, police said.

A weapon was recovered from the scene, according to police. No one else was reported as being shot or injured.

Illinois State Police are investigating and more information will be released sometime Wednesday.
