The suspect in a fatal shooting at a River North Walgreens has been found dead.
The body of 33-year-old Donte Simmons of Rogers was discovered in an alley in the 100 block of Clyde Avenue, according to Evanston police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
A 9mm handgun was recovered by police
Authorities say it appears that Simmons died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Simmons was wanted for questioning in Friday's shooting of a 22-year-old security guard, Troy Cameron, at a Walgreens in the River North neighborhood. Police are still investigating whether Cameron was the intended target.
Simmons was also a suspect in another Friday shooting on Chicago's North Side not far from where his body was found.
In that incident, police reported a body was found near the corner of Chicago Avenue and Juneway Terrace. The victim suffered several gunshots, police said. As of about noon he remained unidentified, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Chicago police issued a statement Saturday afternoon saying Simmons was wanted for the shooting at the Walgreens store, but “any connection between (Simmons) and any other open homicide investigation has not been determined or verified at this time.”
