Suit: Former CPS Engineer Forced Out of Job Because of His Age, Race

A former Chicago Public Schools engineer is suing the Chicago Board of Education, alleging he was forced out of his job because he is black and more than 40 years old.

The lawsuit was filed by John Warren Monday in Circuit Court and named the Board of Education as a defendant.

Warren alleges that in June 2013 he was given a choice: Retire immediately and cash in sick leave or be laid off because of a low performance evaluation. He chose to retire.

He alleges that the low performance evaluation — written by his supervisor, a white man younger than himself — was untrue.

Warren also stated that other engineers affected by layoffs were “primarily older African Americans.”

CPS did not respond to a request for comment Monday evening.

The two-count suit alleges race and age discrimination and seeks more than $100,000 in damages.
