Photo of Subway Restaurant Killer Released

Police: thief shot worker when she tried to run

Police have released a surveillance photo of a man wanted for the fatal shooting of a West Town neighborhood Subway restaurant employee last week.

Lyn Ward, 54, was working in a Subway restaurant in the 1100 block of North Western Avenue when a man armed with a chrome-colored, short-barreled revolver came in about 8:50 p.m. Thursday and announced a robbery, police said. Ward tried to run out the back of the building when the gunman shot her in the neck. He then ordered another employee to open the register and took some cash, fleeing southbound on Western Avenue.

Ward, of the 4600 block of North Magnolia Avenue, was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 7:29 a.m. Friday.

The suspect is described as a black man between 30 to 40 years old, police said. He is between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-9-inches tall with a medium build and medium complexion. He was last seen wearing a dark-colored knit ski hat, a tan-colored 3/4-length parka with a fur trimmed hood, light colored blue jeans and white gym shoes with black trim. The man is considered armed and dangerous.

If anyone sees him or knows of his whereabouts, they are asked to call Harrison Area detectives, at (312) 746-8252.
