Suburban School District Says Students Hacked Online Portal, Changed Attendance Records

Students in the Elgin school district hacked into a district-wide online portal that contained students' personal information

School officials in a northwest suburb say two high school students have hacked into a district-wide online portal and changed attendance records.

Elgin Area District U-46 said Friday it became aware of the breach last week and alerted police.

District spokesman Patrick Mogge tells the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald the students from Bartlett High School got around a firewall and accessed a password-protected portal called Infinite Campus.

The portal allows parents and students to view transcripts, report cards, discipline records and other personal data.

John Heiderscheidt is the district's coordinator of safety and security. He says the students changed attendance records, but it does not appear that they viewed anything else.

The district would not say what discipline the students could face.

No criminal charges have been filed.
