Strong Storms Hit Chicago Area

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for DuPage, Will and Cook Counties until 5:45 p.m. as heavy rain, high-speed winds and hail continues to move into the Chicago area. 

After a warm and breezy start to the day, potentially dangerous storms began to hit the far southwestern counties around 3 p.m.

Small hail, high winds and heavy rain hit portions of DeKalb, LaSalle, and Kane Counties and the surrounding area, moving east to DuPage County around 4 p.m. 

50 mile-per-hour winds were reported in the southwest suburb of Sandwich and west suburban Sugar Grove, and 60 mile-per-hour winds hit DuPage County around 4:40 p.m. 

The National Weather Service warns that driving conditions will be difficult on several highways, with high-speed winds, torrential rain and nickel-size hail. The impacted interstates include: 

  • I-55 between mile markers 265 and 276
  • I-88 between mile markers 117 and 139
  • I-290 between mile markers 11 and 13
  • I-355 between mile markers 12 and 27

Wednesday night will be muggy, hazy and mild with a few showers and thunderstorms favoring areas along and south of I-80. 

Thursday will see a few early morning showers and thunderstorms, mainly south, then partly sunny, breezy, very warm and humid through the day. Highs hover in the upper 80s, but have potential to hit the 90-degree mark.

Friday will be partly sunny, warm and humid with a chance of showers and storms. Highs in the low to mid 80s.

The high humidity remains with the chance of showers and isolated storms for Saturday, Sunday and Monday to finish out the holiday weekend, before the threat of storms subsides going back into the work week on Tuesday.
