Steppenwolf Unveils Plans for Theater Expansion

Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company announced Thursday plans for an expansion that would include a new, 400-seat theater.

The company also named Anna Shapiro and David Schmitz, longtime members of the Steppenwolf family, as the new artistic director and managing director, effective next year.

Current and past leaders of the company made the "major announcement" Thursday morning. They said it will "transform and shape the future of the Theatre for decades to come."

Steppenwolf has raised $20 million so far for the expanded theater, which would sit just south of the current space. It hopes to raise $50 million.

Once the theater meets its fundraising goal, construction would take four or five years.
