State's Attorney Candidate Faces Backlash Over Blackface Costume

The photo of Ed Glazar has prompted calls for him to bow out of the race for Kankakee County State’s Attorney

A Republican candidate for Kankakee County State’s Attorney is on the defensive after a photo surfaced of him in blackface dressed up as Tiger Woods for a Halloween costume.

The photo of Ed Glazar has prompted calls for him to bow out of the race for state’s attorney, but the former county public defender and said he’s not backing down.

The photo was posted to Glazar’s wife’s Facebook page in 2010, but has since been removed, he said.

“This was a theme party with famous couples,” he said. “At the time Tiger Woods was going through problems with his wife and I dressed up as Tiger and his wife.”

Theodis Pace, president of the NAACP chapter in Kankakee County, said the photo is unacceptable, however.

“Here in 2016 there is no place for a public figure to masquerade in black face,” he said.

Glazar apologized to those who thought the image was offensive, saying “that was not the intent.”

“My wife and I do not have a racist bone in our bodies,” he said. “I am sorry. I am not going to quit.”

Glazar’s opponents say the photo shows “poor judgment.”

“He should apologize to the community and get out of the race,” said Democratic candidate Jim Rowe.
