Sword Swiped from Lincoln's Tomb Recovered

Teen arrested, faces charges

The copper sword that went missing from the Lincoln Tomb State Historical Site has been recovered.

Springfield Police said they received a tip Monday that claimed a 16-year-old boy had grabbed the sword from the statute, according to The State Journal-Register.

The boy reported told police that he had climbed the statue and that the sword broke into two pieces and fell loose from its resting place.

Police said the boy hid the sword in a van in an alley.

The sword was returned to the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.

An employee noticed the sword was missing Saturday, Nov. 12. The sword has not been stolen from the site in more than 100 years.
