An election to fill Rahm Emanuel's seat in the U.S. House will be held April 7.

A special election to fill the seat of U.S. Rep. Rahm Emanuel has been set for April 7, the governor's office announced today.

A special primary election for the seat will be held March 3.

Emanuel resigned from his seat Jan. 2 after accepting the post of President-elect Barack Obama's chief of staff.

Emanuel was the representative for the Fifth Congressional District in Illinois, which includes much of Cook County.

By state law, the governor is required to set the date of a special election for a U.S. House seat within five days after the vacancy is created. [Read the governor's writ of election]

  • David Anderson Candidate Tuesday, Jan 27 at 11:44 PM FLAG COMMENT I am David Anderson, and I am in the Republican primary for this special election. I have no ties to any political organization, to any special interest group, and I am not a lawyer! Why don't we vote for REAL CHANGE this time, and install a CITIZEN PUBLIC SERVANT as the congressman for district 5, instead of another machine Democrat, who offers the promises like Santa Claus, but deals like the grinch. So many Democrats su ... MORE >

Pat Quinn NOW wanting to clean up Springfield with the help of Patrick Colllins. This is "Johnny Come Lately" behavior that an elected officer of the State of Illinois should not display. He virtually has been "sitting around" and now that thumbs are down on the Governor, he wants to sprout, shoot up, bloom and do his thing. Quinn ... MORE >
  • Anonymous Monday, Jan 5 at 5:09 PM FLAG COMMENT I live in the 5th district and so I have some perspective on the issue. Dan Rostenkowski and Rod Blagojevich held the seat before Rahm Emanuel so it'll be interesting to see what happens to the next House rep. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illinois's_5th_congressional_district) 1. The constitution gives the Governor the right to pick a successor for Senate, but NOT the House of Rep. 2. The 5th Congressional District of Ill ... MORE >
