Dozens of Evening Events Canceled

Several area schools earlier in the day announced early Friday closures

Chicago Public Schools on Friday canceled all after-school activities, including elementary and high school sports, driver's education classes and third-shift preschool programs, due to the snow storm that's bearing down on the city.

All City Colleges of Chicago campuses and facilities closed at 3 p.m., prompting the cancelation of all night programs.

Schools in West Aurora District 129 will close early by four hours Friday, and all after-school activities in District 147 in West Harvey and Dixmoor have been canceled in anticipation of four to eight inches of snow and what's expected to be a treacherous evening commute.

East Chicago Lighthouse Charter School also is closing early, and Elgin Academy canceled after-school activities.

Several parochial schools in Aurora also ended early, including St. Paul Lutheran-Aurora, which closed at noon, St. Peter School, which closed at 11:30 a.m. and St. Rita of Cascia School, which closed at 12:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning Friday for most of the metro area and a Winter Weather Advisory in far southern suburbs and northwest Indiana.
