Snow Tapers As Cold Moves In

The overnight snowfall brought the city’s season snow total to more than 70 inches

It’s March, it’s the meteorological spring, but it’s still snowy and cold.

The Chicago area was under a Winter Weather Advisory until 9 a.m. Sunday following an overnight storm that dumped several inches.

O’Hare International Airport recorded more than 3.5 inches overnight, and totals of up 6 inches were expected in some areas.

The overnight snowfall brought the city’s season snow total to more than 70 inches, inching the city up in the record books.

Light snow Friday pushed Chicago’s winter season up to the fourth snowiest ever recorded.

Saturday night snow made for a wintry game at Soldier Field as the Blackhawks took on the Penguins in the NHL Stadium Series.

Snow began to taper in the city by the morning hours Sunday, just in time for Jimmy Fallon to take his first Polar Plunge with Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Temperatures were expected to reach into the low-teens Sunday, quite a difference from last year’s above-freezing conditions.

Lake effect snow could move into the area, and was already dumping several inches of snow in parts of northwest Indiana Sunday morning.

Sunday evening is set for a big cool down, with wind chills dipping as low as -20 degrees.

Some areas north of Chicago are under a Wind Chill Advisory from midnight until 9 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Next week remains in the low 20s until Thursday, when the extended forecast predicts highs in the mid-30s.

With temperature predictions well-below the average for this time of year, it appears Old Man Winter isn’t quite ready to leave just yet.
